Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy
Hyperbaric Oxygen therapy (HBOT) is a non-invasive and painless treatment in which a patient lies in a mono-place (single) pressurized chamber while breathing 100% oxygen. HBOT increases the amount of oxygen in the bloodstream, which promotes the formation of new blood vessels in damaged tissue and facilitates new tissue growth. This delivery of more oxygen to the wounded tissue assists in the healing process.
HBOT also inhibits the growth of bacteria therefore; it can be helpful in fighting a variety of infections. Our center has two hyperbaric oxygen chambers. Patients receive daily treatments Monday to Friday. The number of treatments prescribed by the Hyperbaric Provider depends on patient condition and response to therapy.
Most patients receive between 30-40 treatments lasting approximately two hours each. Patients rest comfortably in the clear acrylic chamber and may relax by watching television or listening to music. The specially trained hyperbaric nurse can communicate with the patient during the treatment and monitors the patient at all times.
Several medical problems may benefit from Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy:
- Diabetic Wounds of the Lower Extremities
- Osteomyelitis (Refractory)
- Delayed Radiation Injury (Soft Tissue and Bony Necrosis)
- Compromised Grafts and Flaps
- Necrotizing Soft Tissue Infections
- Idiopathic Sudden Sensorineural Hearing Loss
- Arterial Insufficiencies
- Crush Injury, Compartment Syndrome, and other acute traumatic peripheral ischemia
- Gas Gangrene
