Dr. Abigail Boduch to Discuss ‘Caring for the Female Athlete’ on April 15 in Wells

Abigail-Boduch-MD.pngAbigail Boduch, MD, of Atlantic Orthopaedics & Sports Medicine, will present “Orthopedic Sports Medicine and Caring for the Female Athlete,” Tuesday, April 15, from 6 to 7 p.m., in the Community Room at the Wells Public Library, 1434 Post Road, Wells, Maine. A light dinner and refreshments will be provided before the presentation, followed by a Q&A.

Attendees must register for this complimentary event on Eventbrite. The event will also be livestreamed on Atlantic Orthopaedics & Sports Medicine’s Facebook page, and a recording will be available after the presentation.

The number of girls and women participating in sports has increased dramatically over the past four decades. Last year, over 3.4 million participated in high school athletics, and 229,000 competed in the NCAA in 2022. Currently, 16.4% of U.S. professional athletes are women. An increase in sport-related injuries, along with a focus on injury prevention soon followed. Health care for female athletes has evolved to address varied needs, including nutrition, menstrual, bone, and mental health, to name just a few.

Dr. Boduch, a fellowship-trained sports medicine and trauma surgeon, understands that female athletes benefit from a tailored approach to injury prevention, treatment, and recovery. She understands what distinguishes female athletes from their male counterparts. This allows her to optimize best practices and ultimately provide better care with improved outcomes. Dr. Boduch’s treatment philosophy emphasizes relationship-building with patients, and she approaches each case with a commitment to listening, validating, and collaborating. Individualized care plans—both surgical and non-surgical—help patients maintain or return to an active lifestyle on the field, court, trail, or chosen path.

ABOUT THE PRESENTER

A New Hampshire Seacoast native, Dr. Boduch earned her BS in biochemistry from the University of New Hampshire, and her MD at Penn State College of Medicine in Hershey, Pa. Following medical school, she performed her residency in orthopedic surgery at Brown University. She completed fellowships in sports medicine at the University of Pittsburgh and orthopedic trauma at Brown University and Rhode Island Hospital in Providence, R.I.

With a passion for treating sports injuries of the shoulder, elbow, and knee, Dr. Boduch’s areas of expertise include the treatment of tendon, ligament, cartilage, and other soft-tissue injuries. Her experience covering the Pittsburgh Steelers and Penguins during her fellowship deepened her interest in sports medicine. However, she finds true fulfillment in providing compassionate team coverage at the community level, particularly for local high schools. When not treating and caring for patients, Dr. Boduch enjoys camping, hiking, paddleboarding, or skiing in the nearby mountains with her husband and family.
