Sometimes, things don’t go exactly as planned—but they still unfold in the best possible way. That’s exactly what happened on Tuesday, February 25, the opening day of York Hospital’s newly renovated Cardiac Catheterization Lab.

We had scheduled our first patient for an elective procedure at 1 p.m. However, the day took an unexpected turn when earlier that morning, a patient experiencing a right coronary myocardial infarction (heart attack) was rushed in for urgent care. Within an hour, and after the successful placement of two stents, our official first patient was resting comfortably in the ICU. We are happy to share that he is now recovering at home.

Although our first scheduled patient was now our second official patient, the newly upgraded Cath lab proved fortunate for her as well. Sandra had been experiencing chest pain that mimicked a heart attack. After multiple ER visits and extensive testing, she was diagnosed with coronary artery vasospasm, a condition typically managed with medication. However, her cardiologist, Dr. Christopher Yoo, recommended a catheterization to ensure that no blockages had been overlooked. At 1 p.m. on opening day, Interventional Cardiologist Dr. William Dietz performed the procedure seamlessly, giving Sandra peace of mind with the confirmation of clear arteries. Both Dr. Yoo and Dr. Dietz are confident that her condition can be effectively managed with medication.

Reflecting on the successful launch, York Hospital President, Dr. Patrick Taylor shared, “The advanced technology in our new lab provides incredibly sharp imaging, which is essential for precise diagnostics and interventions. Combined with the expertise of our dedicated cardiac providers, nurses and technicians, we are ensuring the best possible outcomes for our cardiac patients. This investment in state-of-the-art care will have a lasting impact on the heart health of our community.”

York Hospital is proud to offer this enhanced service, reaffirming our commitment to exceptional patient care. We look forward to many more successful procedures in our newly renovated Cath Lab!
